Mid morning  the specially commissioned memorial was unveiled by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh KG. KT. alongside HMS CAVALIER to commemorate the 142 Royal Naval destroyers sunk during the Second World War and over 11,000 men who lost their lives as a result.  This unique memorial, created by the eminent British sculptor Kenneth Potts, will mark the very special contribution made by these ships and the men who served in them.

HMS Cavalier is preserved at Chatham as a memorial to those who lost their lives in destroyers during the Second World War. The HMS Cavalier (Chatham) Trust is grateful for the support and generosity of many people and organisations. In particular to Chatham Historic Trust which provides HMS Cavalier with a berth, administrative, ship keeping, visitor and educational services; to the HMS Cavalier Association, Friends of HMS Cavalier Trust, Trustees of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, and Heritage Lottery Fund whose actions and financial support secured HMS Cavalier's future at Chatham; and to the dedicated group of volunteers who continue to give so much of their time to the preservation.
