  USS Peary (Lt.Cdr. John Michael Bermingham) was sunk by Japanese carrier aircraft  in position 12º30'S, 130º50'E, 91 of her crew were lost and The commanding officer was amongst those killed. 49 were rescued by swimming for boats though 12 were rescued by the Southern Maid.
